Tea at Park Towne on the 18th

Join us on Thursday, January 18th between 6:00-8:00 in Park Towne’s communal living room, aka The Oar Pub. Enjoy some cozy time around the fireplace — some tea (or wine or soft drinks), some snacks and a chance to visit with Smithies. There are billiards and table shuffleboard too.

Park Towne is at 2200 Benjamin Franklin Parkway and the Oar Pub is on the first floor of the South Tower. Parking is available on the outer lane of the Parkway and closest bus lines are the 32, 38 and 48.

Tell your Smith friends to meet you here! Feel free to BYOB, although we will have some refreshments as well.

Skating at Dilworth Park on the 18th

Join the Smith College Club of Philadelphia on Monday Dec 18th between 6:00 and 8:00 at The Rothman Ice Rink at Dilworth Park! Enjoy ice skating, beautiful lights, food trucks, and the Rothman heated cabin for refreshments and snacks! Skaters and non-skaters alike are welcome!

Dilworth Park is great for families and easily accessible from the Mainline and by public transit. Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for children ages 10 and under, and $10 for skate rentals.

We’ll meet at the heated cabin at 6:00 and wear your Smith gear to identify each other (I personally will be wearing my yellow Ivy Day sash!).

On the 18th: Coffee in West Philly

Join the Smith College Club of Philadelphia at Green Line Cafe on 45th and Locust in West Philly for tea, coffee, and sweets before the holiday season begins! Stop in between 10AM and noon to catch up with your favorite local Smithies and meet new ones.

The cafe is accessible via trolley route 34, the Market-Frankford line, and bus routes 21 and 42. Street parking is available in the surrounding neighborhood

On the 18th at PMA

Did you know the Philadelphia Museum of Art is open late every Wednesday with Pay What You Wish admissions?

Join Susie Kwon (class of 2011) and the Philly Smith Club at 5:30 – 7:30 October 18^th for an art-filled gathering and celebrate Octoberfest with a glass of beer!

When you arrive, go to the Great Stair Hall on the first floor and then please look for a table-tent with ‘Smith College Club of Philadelphia’ on it. Drink and food purchase is available – separated from the beer and food pairing that requires tickets.

The Smith College Club of Philadelphia is pleased to invite Philadelphia-area alumnae and their guests to our annual faculty speaker event! Nanci Young, Smith College Archivist, will speak on Monday, October 16th at 6:30 p.m. at the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology (3260 South St., Philadelphia, PA 19104). Nanci will give a presentation on the history of Philadelphia alumnae at Smith College as well as the renovations to the Smith College Neilsen Library.

Admission includes hors d’oeuvres, wine and non-alcoholic beverages. Tickets are $15 for current club members, $25 for non-members, and $10 for new alums (c/o ’13-17). Tonight! We’re doing a very special On the 18th in the neighborhood of new board member, Lola Arellano-Fryer, Kensington!

5pm start, but feel free to come later.

What kind of beer do you serve?
We have an ever shifting beer list of selections that either move us currently or we are simply rekindling a romance with. While it seems dizzying to select what to serve in such an overcrowded market we tend to stick with great beer made by even better people. We try desperately to stay away from trends, but revel in relying on craftsmanship and good business practices to help us make our decisions. While rare beer is a lot of fun to serve and drink we tend to pour the most sought after offerings on a Monday afternoon as opposed to squirreling away one keg and centering a whole event around it. No, quite frankly we would rather be good hosts and allow our guests to sit back, relax, and enjoy their beer unmolested by the hordes.

What if I hate beer? Am I still allowed in?
We offer wine by the glass and by the bottle. No fancy foolery, it’s a wine list Jonathan Richman would approve: accessible, and meant to be enjoyed, not dicussed. We also have a full bar.

How do I get to the Memphis Taproom?
You can find us at the intersection of Memphis Street and E. Cumberland Street on the border of the Port Richmond and Fishtown neighborhoods of Philly, in the Kensington section of the city.

Artist Gallery Talk and Chamber Concert

The Smith College Club of Philadelphia is pleased to announce an artist gallery talk with Holly Trostle Brigham ’88. Join fellow Smith alumnae on Saturday, April 23, 2016 at 2pm at the Michener Museum. Your ticket includes museum admission, Holly’s talk about her exhibit “Sisters and Goddesses,” a chamber music concert, and light refreshments.

At 2pm PAFA-trained and Philadelphia-based artist Holly Trostle Brigham will discuss the seven self-portraits in which she assumes the guise of artists of the past—such as Frida Kahlo, Artemesia Gentileschi, and Tamara de Lempicka—to remind us of their important stories. Brigham also looks to her academic past as a student at Smith, one of the “seven sisters,” connecting those “sisters” with her own life through these portraits.

Then, at 3pm internationally-acclaimed violinist Lenuta Ciulei and cellist/conductor Dr. George Antanasiu will perform a pop-up chamber concert in support of “Holly Trostle Brigham: Sisters and Goddesses.”

Following the concert, light refreshments will be served.

“On the 18th” and Other Special Events in March

Join us for two special events in March!

March 18 Jazz & March 21 Salon

Enjoy an evening of music with fellow Smithies on Friday, March 18 (5pm – 8:45pm) at Art After 5 at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The Women in Jazz program features Valray Sturgis and friends paying homage to greats including Sarah Vaughn, Dinah Washington, and Ella Fitzgerald. Cash bar and light food available for purchase. Art After 5 requires museum admission, but there are 10 free tickets available for members of the Smith College Club of Philadelphia! Members, please email phillysmithclub@gmail.com to request your free ticket. Tickets will be provided in the order email requests are received. Need to renew your membership? Visit the club website to bring your club dues current.

Fight the winter blues at a ‘Smith Club Salon’ on Monday, March 21 at 7pm. Katherine Schneider ’86 will lead us in exploring,“Where are You on the Optimism Spectrum?” Drawing on lessons from neuroscience, psychology, religion and her mother, Dr. Schneider will explore the journey to filling our glasses at least halfway. Her talk will be followed by opportunity for discussion, mingling, good cheer – and wine and light refreshments provided by the club. Holiday Cheer on December 10th!

December is here and the holidays are around the corner! But before the current Smithies can enjoy a relaxing winter break, they have a round of finals to complete. Help us send them a little holiday cheer and exam-time encouragement by joining us December 10 at 6pm to assemble winter care packages. Hot cocoa and cookies provided.
