Referendum or Choice? The 2012 Election and the Shape of Things to Come. Political science models that rely on economic indicators predict that the incumbent in a recession will lose… but lots of us wonder if that’s all there is to it.

The Smith College Club of Philadelphia is proud to announce that Marc Lendler, Professor of American Government, will be coming to Philadelphia on October 9th to speak to our group about the upcoming presidential election.  For those who did not have the pleasure of taking a class with him, Professor Lendler is an engaging lecturer who is sure to bring a unique perspective to current electoral issues. We are thrilled to be holding this event at The Acorn Club, an elegant women’s club in Center City established in 1886. Join us for a delicious meal, followed by Professor Lender’s talk, and of course, time for Q&A and mingling afterwards. RSVP with pre-payment required.

When: Tuesday, October 9th, 6 – 9 pm. Cash bar cocktail hour from 6 – 7 pm. Dinner will be served at 7 pm, followed by talk.

Join us at the Rosenbach Museum and Library for a special event hosted by Judy Guston ’82, Curator and Director of Collections.

Smithies can choose to take a house tour or to view the exhibitions; afterward we will gather for a Q&A with Ms. Guston, then conduct our short annual meeting, and enjoy a wine and cheese reception.

Sign up ahead of time to take a house tour of the 1865 townhouse owned by renowned book dealer, Dr. A.S.W. Rosenbach, and his brother, Philip Rosenbach. The docent-led tour includes a visit to the rare book library, and a re-creation of modernist poet Marianne Moore‘s Greenwich Village living room. Space is limited, so please reserve your spot for the tour.

Those who do not take the tour can check out the two current exhibitions:

–From Pen to Publisher: The Life of Three Sendak Picture Books, which follows the creation of Maurice Sendak‘s ―The Sign on Rosie‘s Door (1960), Outside Over There (1981), and Brundibar (2003).

–Titanic: The Rise of Rosenbach which tells the story of Dr. A.S.W. Rosenbach as he hears about the sinking of the Titanic and realizes a protégé has died on board. Learn about the tragic event and how Rosenbach‘s personal loss inspired his later success.

Since there is not time for both tour and exhibits, Ms. Guston has
generously offered each attendee an additional ticket, to return to the Rosenbach and take a tour or see the exhibitions at a later date

Due to unforeseen circumstances this event had to be canceled on its original date in April. But never fear! We have rescheduled it for June.

Enjoy the beautiful Wissahickon Creek and Watershed area with us on a walk down the Green Ribbon Trail! The Wissahickon Valley Watershed Association‘s Anne Standish ’79, along with a volunteer horticulturist and a birder, will lead us from the WVWA’s historic Four Mills Barn, and we’ll enjoy refreshments together afterwards. Well-behaved canines are welcome!

Mark your calendars! On Saturday, April 14, we will be treated to a special tour of the Free Library of Philadelphia’s Rare Book Department, led by Katharine Chandler ’97. Katharine will show us a cuneiform tablet, an Egyptian book of the dead, a medieval book of hours, a leaf from a Gutenberg Bible, the Elkins Room, and more! While there, you can also check out the Charles Dickens exhibition, celebrating the author’s 200th birthday.

Please note, all visitors will be required to check coats and bags (including purses) when touring the precious collections. They will be held securely by Free Library staff.

The restaurant is conveniently located around the corner from the Haverford Station on the Paoli/Thorndale SEPTA line (formerly the R5).
